 The remedies

Dr Samuel Hahnemann discovered homeopathy in the late 1700s.

He saw lots of cases of smallpox with symptoms of fever, red spots and throbbing pains. He also saw patients who were suffering as a result of contact with deadly nightshade (Belladonna), a poisonous plant that caused red spots, fever and throbbing pains.

Dr Hahnemann wondered what would happen if he treated the smallpox patients with dilute doses of Belladonna, and he cured hundreds of cases of smallpox in this way.

Curing like with like

He had discovered the principle of curing like with like before vaccination had been discovered. Since Dr Hahnemann discovered this use for Belladonna, over 5,000 other remedies have been discovered. They all work on the principle of curing like with like.

The vast majority of remedies are made from a range of plant, mineral and animal products. Some of the more modern remedies are made from other substances, such as electricity, sugar and chocolate. Other homeopathic remedies are made from physiological substances such as hormones (isotope remedies), and these can be used in the treatment of thyroid or hormone problems.
